The ChatGPT shopping feature turns ChatGPT from a chatbot that answers questions into a shopping assistant that helps you discover products and, for eligible items, buy them without leaving the conversation. It now has its own Shopping entry in the sidebar, and it combines two things: conversational product research and in-chat purchasing called Instant Checkout. This guide explains what the feature is, how it works, how to use it as a shopper, and where it is and is not available in 2026.

What is the ChatGPT shopping feature?

ChatGPT shopping is a product discovery experience built into ChatGPT. Instead of typing keywords into a search engine and sifting through links, you describe what you want in natural language, and ChatGPT returns a curated set of specific products with images, prices, and key details.

Ask for something like a waterproof trail runner under $150 with a wide toe box, and the assistant returns a tailored carousel of options rather than a page of blue links. For products that support it, a Buy button lets you complete the purchase inside the chat. Results are organic and unsponsored, ranked purely on relevance to your request rather than paid placement.

How does ChatGPT shopping work?

Under the hood, ChatGPT detects shopping intent in your message, then pulls current product information from the web and shopping data sources so it can show accurate, up-to-date pricing and availability. Because it reads live data rather than relying only on training data, it can reflect a current sale or an out-of-stock variant.

From there the experience splits into two parts:

  • Shopping research is the conversational discovery layer. ChatGPT asks clarifying questions about your budget, who the product is for, and your preferences, then narrows options and lets you refine the results interactively.
  • Instant Checkout is the purchase layer. When a product supports it, you tap Buy, confirm your order, shipping, and payment details, and complete the purchase without leaving ChatGPT. It is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard OpenAI co-developed with Stripe.

Crucially, the merchant remains the seller of record. They keep control of payments, order data, and the customer relationship, and offering Instant Checkout gives no ranking advantage, so placement stays organic.

Shopping research vs. Instant Checkout

It helps to keep these two apart, because they are available in different places. Shopping research is about helping you decide what to buy: it works broadly, pulling options from across the web and summarizing specs, reviews, and prices. Instant Checkout is about completing the purchase: it only appears on products from merchants who have integrated with the protocol and are in a supported region. In other words, ChatGPT can help you research almost anything, but only some of those products will have a Buy button today.

How to use ChatGPT shopping

  • Describe the outcome, not keywords. Tell ChatGPT the use case, budget, and constraints, for example a gift for a ceramics lover under $60 that ships by Friday.
  • Answer its questions. The research flow gets better as you clarify who it is for and what matters most.
  • Compare in the chat. Ask it to line up two or three options on the specs you care about instead of opening a dozen tabs.
  • Check for a Buy button. If an item supports Instant Checkout, you can purchase it in place; if not, ChatGPT links you out to the store.
  • Verify the important details. AI results can occasionally be outdated or wrong, so confirm price, availability, and return terms before buying.

Availability and limitations in 2026

The feature is expanding quickly but is not universal yet. Instant Checkout launched with U.S. Etsy sellers and is rolling out to more than a million Shopify merchants, including major brands, with support for additional platforms and regions on OpenAI's roadmap. Early on it handles single-item purchases, with multi-item carts planned. Coverage, accuracy, and speed are still maturing, and because AI can surface incorrect or outdated information, it works best as a research concierge you double-check rather than a fully hands-off buyer. Shopping research itself rolled out more broadly as a visual, conversational interface.

Why ChatGPT shopping matters for businesses

For merchants, this is a shift from the click-to-buy funnel to a chat-to-checkout one. Discovery increasingly happens inside the assistant, before a shopper ever visits your site, and product results are earned through relevance and clean data rather than ad spend. With ChatGPT reaching hundreds of millions of weekly users, being present and purchasable inside it is becoming a real channel. If you sell products and want to appear here, the next step is understanding the merchant side: see our guide on how to sell products on ChatGPT.
